Sia-Sangbok Lee’s artistic journey is rooted in a profound curiosity about the universe that began in childhood, gazing through telescopes at celestial bodies. This fascination evolved into a lifelong exploration of self and existence, represented by a single dot ("•")—a symbol of origin, self, and the cosmos.

Her work is deeply influenced by Eastern philosophical perspectives, focusing on themes such as the relationship between the self and the universe, the harmony of heaven and earth, and the spiritual interconnection of all life. In series like Heaven and Earth and Relationship of Life, Lee uses circles and lines to represent cosmic unity and spiritual restoration, emphasizing a vision of love and peace.

Recent works explore the vastness of space—galaxies, stars, and nebulae—reflecting the idea that humans, like the universe, originate from a single point. Inspired by Carl Sagan’s quote, “We are made of star stuff,” Lee seeks to express the unity between the microcosm (self) and macrocosm (universe), aspiring for her heart to radiate like the sun in universal harmony.

Lee’s materials—Hanji (traditional Korean paper), acrylic, soil, stone powder, and mulberry bark—are chosen to physically embody the philosophical and spiritual ideas in her work. She emphasizes interconnectedness through the absorption and texture of Hanji, which allows pigments to merge organically, symbolizing the oneness of spirit and matter.

Ultimately, Lee’s art invites viewers to see themselves as cosmic beings, urging them to reflect on their place in the universe and discover a deeper spiritual connection with all existence.
