Bridging East and West Through Nature and Art Gony’s artistic journey began in the world of fashion, where she cultivated a sharp eye for detail and craftsmanship as a denim designer for one of the world’s largest global companies. A graduate of Ewha Womans University in Seoul, Korea, where she studied Textile and Clothing, Gony moved to the U.S. to pursue her fashion career. While working in a fast-paced, global design environment, she found herself increasingly drawn to her roots. Her experience of different cultures as a fashion designer sparked a deeper curiosity and appreciation for her Korean heritage.
This inner pull led her, in 2014, to begin studying traditional Korean culture, including bojagi wrapping (a centuries-old Korean wrapping cloth tradition) and oriental flower arrangement. What began as personal exploration soon became a second creative path. She became actively involved in corporate event floral design and eco-friendly custom gift packaging, bringing these traditional forms into modern spaces in thoughtful, artful ways.
Today, Gony runs a small studio in Manhattan, where she teaches bojagi and Nlower arrangement classes, helping others connect with the beauty and philosophy of these traditional Korean arts. These practices, rich with symbolism and a reverence for nature, naturally complement her work as a painter.
“For over a decade, while designing, I quietly nurtured my passion for painting and music. These pursuits weren’t just creative outlets but essential ways for me to express emotions that design alone couldn’t capture.”
Her artwork reflects this dual path: inspired by the organic forms of nature and deeply rooted in cultural symbolism, her paintings combine traditional black ink, acrylic, and oil, creating pieces that are both meditative and expressive. Influenced by both Eastern aesthetics and Western abstract expressionism, her work bridges two worlds—one grounded in heritage, the other in exploration.
Music is another key thread in Gony’s creative process. She often paints with sound, allowing rhythm to guide her brush. This results in visual compositions that are emotionally layered and dynamic—harmonies made visible through color, form, and movement. Her work has been featured internationally, most recently as part of Miami Art Week 2024, where she was selected as an Emerging Artist at Coral Gables Museum, and included in The Official Miami Art Week™ Pop-Up Show group exhibition.
“I hope my work encourages others to pause, reflect, and discover their own meaning within it.”
