Serena was born in Seoul, South Korea, and currently lives and works in Maryland, USA. She studied printmaking at Hongik University in Seoul, where her early training in watercolor and drawing-skills she had practiced since childhood-significantly influenced her printmaking style. Drawn to the contrast between the freedom of painting and the precision of printmaking, she eventually shifted her focus entirely to painting after immigrating to the U.S. Elements of her printmaking background continue to appear subtly throughout her work, adding a layer of quiet structure to her expressive compositions.
Serena's artistic practice centers on two main themes: bridging the cultural divide between South Korea and the United States, and exploring the everyday challenges faced by modern society. Her semi-abstract style evokes a calm, poetic atmosphere that reflects these complex ideas. In addition to painting, she creates abstract sculptures and installations using everyday materials such as coffee grounds, capsules, and cup lids-infusing ordinary objects with new meaning.
Throughout her career, Serena has received several awards in South Korea, including the 1992 Korean Art Competition and the New Art Competition. She has participated in over 70 group exhibitions, including the Korea-Japan Printmaking Exchange Fair at the Hongik University Museum in Seoul. Her work has also been featured in five solo exhibitions, including shows at Gallery SOM in Seoul and the Orchard Gallery in Maryland. In 2008, she was recognized as "Artist of the Month" by The Gazette newspaper in Maryland. In 2021, Serena curated and presented a special exhibition titled Andante at the Jo Ann Rose Gallery at the Reston Community Center in Virginia.
